Chapter 10
WHAT ARE MY ACTIONS?
âYou donât have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great.â
âZig Ziglar
THERE IS AN old maxim that states, âIf you want to see where you will be in 10 years, it will be based on two things: the books you read and the people you hang around.â While it is easy to dismiss that as a bit pithy and simplistic, for those in an intentional process of development, it rings true. As we talk about âManifest into actions,â you must realize that effective manifestation requires work. You canât just sit around and think about what you want and expect it to happen. Even those who take a broader interpretation of what manifestation looks like still speak about âputting good things out thereâ in hoping to expect something back. The good things are our actions. Whichever conceptualization you take to the idea of manifestation, it still requires action and work. The work of leadership.
This aspect of the Tempus Model really gets at the input and the preparation steps. This is where the âwhy,â the âwhat,â and the âhowâ really come together. Through intentional investment, we broaden the aperture of what actions are possible. You canât manifest what you donât possess. You canât manifest beyond your thinking and belief. If you donât âsee it,â you canât âbe it.â Whereas some people hope that an outcome will occur without first putting in the requisite work, manifestation doesnât happen without intentionality, purpose, and, yes, work. Through your diligence you can create the conditions where the manifestation of your intended actions becomes a possibility. Which can then turn into a reality in your moments.
There is another common saying out there that âhope is not a strategy.â There are many people out there who are hoping for something to happen without doing something about it. We are not suggesting that hope should not exist. Instead, we see hope coexisting with work which can result in the intended manifested outcome. Much like we talked about luck before, when you are in the process of doing something (like investing in yourself), you create the opportunity space for the thing you want to occur. That is how we see manifestation of actions.
So, letâs look back at the quote that started this chapter: where you will be in 10 years will be based on the books you read and the people you hang around. Letâs look at each of these. Why the books you read? Itâs because what you put in becomes the ingredients of what you put out or become. If you are putting in nonproductive material, you canât expect productive results. When world-renowned chef Gordon Ramsay is putting together a meal, he gathers what he needs ahead of time so that he can ensure that the recipe comes out the way he wants it to. He intentionally takes the time to source the ingredients before he starts so that he is prepared. If he uses inferior ingredients, this will necessarily have an impact on the quality of food he produces.
